Women Wednesday: Geek Girl Declaration.

11:05:00 AM
I found this goodie while searching The Fangirls Guide To The Galaxy...

I thought it was a good message to share on "Women Wednesday. Geek girls don't have to prove themselves. Whether you're new to embracing the geek girl in you or you're a vet... you have to just own it, you don't have to pass any test! You can be a girly girl and still a geek girl... don't let anyone judge you! It's ok to support and encourage the new female characters and writers in the comic book industry (girls have to stick together). GEEK GIRLS DON'T APOLOGIZE. You're smart, beautiful and witty.

Make sure you read the whole snippet and go do your thing girl! A Fan girl, a Geek Girl, a Feminist... whatever they want to call you, you are a force to be reckoned with!

Last summer while browsing the Threadless site, I purchased this tee (well the tank top version)

... at no point did I bother to check out who the artist/designer was, because who cares, it's just a nice looking shirt.

Fast-Forward to January, I'm browsing the ArtFido instagram account and I run into this:

PREACH: A Little Girls Letter To DC Comics About Girl Power.

12:32:00 PM
There has ALWAYS been so much back and forth about women in the comic book industry. Whether it's about female writers, artist, or the female characters in the comics themselves. People fight about how they're so sexually exposed and have crazy body standards for young women to look up too. There's also a way smaller percentage of female characters on TV shows and movies.

But Anyways, to not make this chat go on forever... it's not like adult women are the only ones noticing!  11 year old Rowan is the brave little soul who wrote this letter to DC Comics and honestly, I hope more little girls are growing up being taught to speak their minds just like here!

Dear DC comics,

My name is Rowan and I am 11 years old. I love superheroes and have been reading comics and watching superhero cartoons and movies since I was very young. I'm a girl, and I'm upset because there aren't very many girl superheroes or movies and comics from DC.

For my birthday, I got some of your Justice League Chibis™. I noticed in the little pamphlet that there are only 2 girl Chibis, and 10 boys. Also, the background for the girl figures was all pink and purple.

I remember watching Justice League cartoons when I was really young with my dad. There are Superman and Batman movies, but not a Wonder Woman one. You have a Flash TV show, but not a Wonder Woman one. Marvel Comics made a movie about a talking tree and raccoon awesome, but you haven't made a movie with Wonder Woman.

I would really like a Hawgirl (sic) or Catwoman or the girls of the Young Justice TV show action figures please. I love your comics, but I would love them a whole lot more if there were more girls.

I asked a lot of the people I know whether they watched movies or read books or comics where girls were the main characters, they all said yes.

Please do something about this. Girls read comics too and they care.

Sincerely, Rowan.

I was so taken by this letter and her detailed accounts about the packaging and numbers and how she went around asking her friends questions... Rowan, you rock!

Anyway, here is what DC Comics had to say via Twitter...

Though I do believe things have been changing and there has been more and more female writers, artist, and characters on TV... it has all taken A REAL LONG TIME to happen. I can only hope things keep going in this direction and eventually it won't be such a big issue anymore.

Some fans did jump to speak their minds on some of the issues as well...

While other fans congratulated Comic Book Houses on their progress towards females...

I personally understand many peoples frustration on this topic... these changes are WAY OVERDUE. However, they do say "Better Late Than Never". I see a lot of changes celebrating females going on. More female artist, more writers, more conservative outfits (Ex: New Wonder Woman), more on TV (Agent Carter, Wonder Woman in progress as well as Jessica Jones).

Now I believe we all have to sit back, relax, and enjoy the progress...

What do you think?

CW's 'Arrow' Back On Tonight.

12:45:00 PM
Remember how The Arrow (Oliver Queen) left us in the mid-season finale?

Yeah... Not Pretty Buddy!

Totally not cool crushing the hearts of geeks boys and swooning girls all over the world there ollie. In the words of Stephanie Tanner "HOW RUDE!"

Basically, for anyone who needs a quick catch up...

  • Oliver admits to killing Black Canary (Sara Lance).
  • In reality, Thea Queen killed her BUT has no recollection of it.
  • Malcolm Merlyn used a plant called "votura" on Thea which basically brainwashed her and made her do what he wanted.
  • Oliver admits to Ra’s al Ghul that he killed Sara to protect Thea from being killed.
  • Oliver then duels to the death with Ra’s al Ghul. Oliver put on a poor preformance, get's stabbed with a sword through the chest, and gets kicked off a snowy mountain ledge.
  • We all presume he's dead because after that fight, I mean... C'mon.

But as we all know, Oliver won't stay dead. Who will save him? What strange magic, voo-doo tricks or fountains will be used to bring him back to life? I guess we'll find out tonight!

See you soon Arrow. And I hope you're hella pissed.

Man Crush Monday: Oliver Queen. Arrow.

10:15:00 PM
Here on Pop Goes The Nubia I'm going to start a segment called "Man Crush Monday" but it's not what you think.

Women are always talking about how men are disappointing them and blah, blah, blah, life sucks right? Anyway, I will rant about the men (whether they're real or fictionally) who have disappointed me or in other words CRUSHED ME. I'm not here to talk about how hot you may or may not be.

I'm going to start with one of my latest heartbreaks... Oliver Queen.

Who's a fan of the CW's amazing TV show Arrow? You Know the one based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow? I'm a BIG one. But then...

WTF IS THIS?

In case you're having a hard time processing it, here's a better look. THIS.

MotherF@#%&!*

Oliver Queen, you have officially CRUSHED me and failed this... whatever!

Did you not train hard enough Oliver? Huh? I mean c'mon! I need answers.

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Exhibit C

Exhibit D
It's safe to say Oliver Queen went from a snobbish boy to well... having a pretty tough life. But he's been trained well and has overcome so much. I put all my faith, hope, and confidence in his triumph.

The Arrow midseason finale “The Climb” was a nightmare come to life when I saw THIS
(Yes, there it is again.)

(If you'd like to see the fight, click HERE and watch the episode on CWtv.)

The moment Ra’s al Ghul kicked your ass I felt my heart crumble. I mean, Ra's basically toyed with you and toyed with my emotions at the same time (he's good). It was hard to watch to say the least.

You weren't mentally there, I know Oliver... I know. Finding out your sister Thea Queen killed Sara Lance AKA Black Canary, AKA your ex-girlfriend, AKA Sister of your other ex-girlfriend Laurel Lance, AKA soon to be new Black Canary... You following me here?  I'm kind of dizzy.

Anyway, Thea killing Sara without her even having any recollection of it because of Malcolm Merlyn's smooth criminal moves and the use of a plant called votura didn't sit well with you, total mind fuck. You got too emotional man. YOU BROKE MY HEART.

There can't be an Arrow without the freaken Arrow right? Him in all his emerald archer glory (I'm sure Stephen Amell still has a job folks) but the visual alone was devastating.

Who will save you Oliver? Perhaps Diggle? Maseo? Meryln? Will you be able to mend my mutilated heart Ollie?

Hopefully someone will body slam you into the "Fountain of Essence" #JustSayin.

Xx Nubia

P.S. Who shares my sorrow?
P.P.S. Still love you
