Man, when I was younger I didn't read much comics really. I got into Marvel through watching the X-Men cartoons on Saturday morning (some of the best days of my life.) Anyway, when I first purchased a few of my own comics I loved Michael Turner's art work and it led to me loving Witchblade (AKA Sara Pezzini) published by Top Cow Productions/Image Comics.
Witchblade Writers: Christina Z, David Wohl, Marc Silvestri, Brian Haberlin, Ron Marz Artists: Michael Turner, Keu Cha, Marc Silvestri, Stjepan Sejic
Creators: Marc Silvestri, David Wohl, Brian Haberlin, Christina Z, Michael Turner
So what exactly is the Witchblade?
Sara Pezzini is a homicide detective who happens to stumble upon the Witchblade. The Witchblade is an artifact in the form of a gauntlet. It ends up becoming part of Sara gives her variety of powers in order to fight supernatural evil. Awesome right? I wish I could find the Witchblade.
Sara was close to death while getting injured on the case and then the Witchblade found her and healed her wounds. It's a long and complicated story to explain but let's just say Sara fights off anyone who's interested in possessing the Witchblade, especially Kenneth Irons and his bodyguard Ian Nottingham.
Anyways, Witchblade is bad ass in the best way possible. It doesn't hurt that Michael Turner made her insanely appealing too. I know there's a lot of controversy about how female characters are drawn in the comic book industry "too sexy, too exposed" and so on... but I loved Michael Turners work. Perhaps it is a tad bit exposing, but it also speaks volumes of power, confidence and beauty to me. Most of the ladies he drew look fierce and like they were ready to take on anything coming their way. For me that over shadowed any body part they may have been showing off.
On another note, I never got around to watching the Witchblade television series that aired on TNT is 2000. Anyone knows if it's any good? I'll have to check it out soon. IMDB has it rated at a 6.4 which isn't too terrible.
For your viewing pleasure, here is our main women this Wednesday.
Recently I was being my normal self and looking for some fresh and cool gear to add to my wardrobe. I was thinking about something that would embrace my inner geek girl. After roaming a while on the inter-webs I ended up on Etsy as-per-usual and discovered GoFollowRabbits.
It's hard to find a site that seems to carry good quality merchandise with nice prints at a fairly reasonable price considering it's hand made and not mass produced in China. From The Delorean, to Captain America, Alice In Wonderland, Nintendo, Pokemon, Adventure Time, Mario, X-Men, and so much more... here are a few of my favorites.
They pretty much cover comics, video games, TV, and movie culture covered.
These look like they would make awesome gifts for that special girl in your life too. Did I mention the store has some great reviews too?
Shop HERE. They also just launched their own website which you can check out HERE.
Here on Pop Goes The Nubia I'm going to start a segment called "Man Crush Monday" but it's not what you think.
Women are always talking about how men are disappointing them and blah, blah, blah, life sucks right? Anyway, I will rant about the men (whether they're real or fictionally) who have disappointed me or in other words CRUSHED ME. I'm not here to talk about how hot you may or may not be.
I'm going to start with one of my latest heartbreaks... Oliver Queen.
Who's a fan of the CW's amazing TV show Arrow? You Know the one based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow? I'm a BIG one. But then...
WTF IS THIS?
In case you're having a hard time processing it, here's a better look. THIS.
MotherF@#%&!*
Oliver Queen, you have officially CRUSHED me and failed this... whatever!
Did you not train hard enough Oliver? Huh? I mean c'mon! I need answers.
Exhibit A
Exhibit B
Exhibit C
Exhibit D
It's safe to say Oliver Queen went from a snobbish boy to well... having a pretty tough life. But he's been trained well and has overcome so much. I put all my faith, hope, and confidence in his triumph.
The Arrow midseason finale “The Climb” was a nightmare come to life when I saw THIS.
(Yes, there it is again.)
(If you'd like to see the fight, click HERE and watch the episode on CWtv.)
The moment Ra’s al Ghul kicked your ass I felt my heart crumble. I mean, Ra's basically toyed with you and toyed with my emotions at the same time (he's good). It was hard to watch to say the least.
You weren't mentally there, I know Oliver... I know. Finding out your sister Thea Queen killed Sara Lance AKA Black Canary, AKA your ex-girlfriend, AKA Sister of your other ex-girlfriend Laurel Lance, AKA soon to be new Black Canary... You following me here? I'm kind of dizzy.
Anyway, Thea killing Sara without her even having any recollection of it because of Malcolm Merlyn's smooth criminal moves and the use of a plant called votura didn't sit well with you, total mind fuck. You got too emotional man. YOU BROKE MY HEART.
There can't be an Arrow without the freaken Arrow right? Him in all his emerald archer glory (I'm sure Stephen Amell still has a job folks) but the visual alone was devastating.
Who will save you Oliver? Perhaps Diggle? Maseo? Meryln? Will you be able to mend my mutilated heart Ollie?
Hopefully someone will body slam you into the "Fountain of Essence" #JustSayin.
And if ya don't know, now ya know...

Yesterday my brother texted me THIS and I got pretty excited.
Many of you may have seen Flophouse at comic coventions with their awesome tees and pancake pillows, but their website wasn't available. Alas the day has come! Check out http://flophouse.com.
I love their whole mission and how they try to take you back to those special childhood moments we all miss and wish we could revisit.
- THE WHY? -
When we set out on this journey to start our new little company, many thoughts raced through my mind as to why we wanted to do this. Do what you love and the money will follow!…….Do more of what makes you happy!……..Do what your heart tells you to do!……Just do it!……….Relax don’t do it!?………….I was so confused!!!&@^#%
In the end I figured, let’s just make stuff we love and figure out the rest later. Worst case, we got plenty of nifty shirts we can wear ourselves and pancake pillows we can give out to friends and family as Christmas presents over the next 100 years or so.
We try to create more of a “feeling” than just another t-shirt or plush item – we want to stir childhood memories and fun times. Enjoy life here and now, and try not to take things so seriously – unless of course you spent your life savings on t-shirts and pancake pillows (just kidding). So to answer the question as to the Why? Flophouse, fun stuff we wanted for ourselves! Hope you like it too.
-Flophouse Felix
Have I mentioned that their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pizza boxes are like the coolest thing ever?! They make you want to shop more.
If you're a fan of TMNT, Street Fighter, Power Rangers and more you must check them out Below is a sneak peak of some of the things you can shop
I was very excited today when I heard that Netflix has purchased the rights to produce a series based off of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” by Lemony Snicket. I fell in love with the movie starring Jim Carey in 2004. I was so smitten with the movie that my brother gifted me with all the books!
The series will be a Netflix production in association with Paramount Television. While some people are overly excited about the news, some think it's a risk and a bad idea for Netflix... but you know what I say?
No Risk, No Reward!
If you haven't read the books, I recommend you get familiar with them (more than 65 million copies sold worldwide!). You can find some awesome deals on the whole collection on Amazon like this one HERE or if you get the books on Kindle it's crazy affordable too.
The books revolve around the story of the orphaned Baudelaire children (Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire) who often face off with the evil Count Olaf. The children's main mission is to discover the secret of their parents death. You really do fall in love with the children and their individual characteristics... It's endearing, funny, magical, and dark. You just don't find those qualities in many books the way you do in this series.
“On the search for fantastic material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for generations of readers is ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events,'” said Cindy Holland, VP of original content for Netflix. “The world created by Lemony Snicket is unique, darkly funny, and relatable. We can’t wait to bring it to life for Netflix members.” “I can’t believe it,” Mr. Snicket said, from an undisclosed location. “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books. *Snicket is the pen name of author Daniel Handler*
So what do you all think? Will it be a hit or miss? I personally think it will be a nice, new and refreshing series for Netflix, different than anything they have. A breath of fresh air! It will be great for drawing in families and I also believe many adults will be enticed by the show too because of the classic books.
I love a strong, smart and educated women. Want to know what's the cherry on top of that? When she's outspoken and stands up for herself! I admire a lady that knows how to speak her mind and isn't afraid of being criticized based on the worlds views of Man vs Woman. The kind of woman I've described pretty much sums up to be the late, great Bette Davis.
Lately I've been very much into the PBS animation series Blank on Blank. The videos are quite amazing and you should all take a few minutes to check them out. One of their latest installments is a rare interview of Bette Davis on The Sexes by entertainment columnist Shirley Eder. The interview was conducted in 1963.
The video below was made by executive producer and Blank on Blank creator David Gerlach with animator-director Patrick Smith and audio producer Amy Drozdowska.
I'm a big fan of Patrick Smith's animation and love the stuff he's been doing for Blank on Blank. The word "sublime" is often used to describe his work. I love the way he interprets people and captures their essence...their expressions and movements. Patrick Smith definitely lets something special shine through in his work.
Here are a few of my favorite Bette Davis quotes from the interview
*Never said anything just for the sake of being, you know, startling.
*One can be respected with the truth in Hollywood just as much as anywhere else you know or else I wouldn’t have had a career.
*We all work for men. You know they’re the people in charge and I think they find women easier who haven’t the ability to think for themselves or stand up for themselves.
*I think men have got to change an awful lot. I think somehow they still prefer the little woman.
*The real female should be partly male and the real male should be partly female anyway. So if you ever run into that in either sex you’ve run into something very, very fine, I think.
Hope you all enjoy the video and make sure to check out a few of the other Blank on Blank episodes.
New York Comic Con 2014 came and went in the blink of an eye. It's funny because I remember all the times I went to Comic Con it seemed so long because of all the preparation before hand. See, I always cosplay. I usually dress up 3 out of 4 days minimum. All the makeup, hair, props, making sure things aren't going to fall apart on me etc. It takes a lot of work. This isn't Halloween folks, It's New York Freaken Comic Con! A lot of thought goes behind these costumes. These cosplayers are more than just dressed up, they're actors.
The only New York Comic Con I didn't dress up for was my very first one. I was about 17.... after that I was hooked. I remember going down the aisles at 17 (A young and cute little Nubia) looking at all the booths and enjoying the art of creativity left and right thinking WOW, this is awesome. The cosplayers were a plus back in the day. It's was a magical little moment and the vibe back then was just SO COOL. Comic Con wasn't as packed and popular as it is now so it felt even more special. Don't get me wrong, things are still awesome now but a lot has changed in 10 years, A LOT.
Anyway moving on, our awesome friend and photographer Theresa Taylor went behind her lens to show us some of the great costumes people cooked up this year. Enjoy!
